A New American Council for Energy-Efficient Economy Report

Aug 29, 2023 | Industry Happenings

Texas is facing significant electric reliability challenges, particularly during scorching summer heat waves and harsh winter cold fronts. To address these concerns and pave the way for a more efficient and reliable energy future, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has released a report with a set of transformative recommendations. Below, we’ll dive into the findings and explore the promising programs that could enhance the energy landscape in the Lone Star State.

Overview of ACEEE’s Report

The ACEEE report puts forth an impressive suite of energy efficiency (EE) and demand response (DR) programs aimed at reducing peak demand during critical periods. By deploying these programs under statewide direction from 2024 to 2030, Texas can serve more than 13 million households and offset an estimated 14,800 MW of summer peak load and 23,500 MW of winter peak load. This exceeds the capacity of ten new gas plants proposed as “insurance” by some developers, providing a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution.

Advantages of Customer Interaction, Monitoring, and Behavior Programs

This report strongly recommends that distribution utilities lead these programs, benefiting from economies of scale and targeted geographic approaches that help reduce costs. Customer interaction, monitoring, and behavior-focused initiatives, such as smart thermostat control for central air conditioners and managed electric vehicle charging, play a vital role in achieving these substantial peak demand reductions.

At Energy Texas, we encourage smart thermostat control to help lower bills. Thanks to our partnership with ecobee, Energy Texas members can enjoy a smart thermostat at an exclusive price and be rewarded for conserving energy.

Proposed Programs by ACEEE

A comprehensive set of ten energy efficiency and demand response measures is outlined in the report, targeting both residential and commercial sectors. These programs include replacing electric furnaces with ENERGY STAR® heat pumps, attic insulation and sealing incentives, smart thermostat programs, and more. Two initiatives stand out as being particularly noteworthy:

  • Central Air Conditioner with Smart Thermostat Control Demand Response: This program empowers customers to optimize their cooling systems during peak periods, reducing strain on the grid and enhancing reliability.
  • Electric Vehicle Managed Charging: Preparing for a future with increased EV adoption, this program encourages off-peak charging, alleviating pressure during high-demand times.

Benefits of Central Air Conditioners with Smart Thermostat Control

Central air conditioners with smart thermostat control deliver significant benefits. By actively managing cooling operations during peak demand periods, this program leads to a remarkable 8,800 MW reduction in summer peak load. Moreover, customers enjoy improved comfort, energy bill savings, and a more resilient energy grid.

Reasons to Consider Electric Vehicle-Managed Charging in the Future

As electric vehicles continue to gain popularity, managed charging emerges as a game-changing solution. Programs focused on incentivizing off-peak charging for EVs can contribute to substantial summer peak reductions, ensuring a smoother, more reliable power supply. Embracing this trend positions Texas as a forward-thinking leader in sustainable energy solutions.
